Quote from Bob Metcalfe

Bob Metcalfe started 3Com and invented EtherNet.  This is what he said about open source software in 1999:

The Open Source Movement's ideology is utopian balderdash [... that]
reminds me of communism. [...] Linux [is like] organic software grown
in utopia by spiritualists [...] When they bring organic fruit to
market, you pay extra for small apples with open sores – the Open Sores
Movement. When [Windows 2000] gets here, goodbye Linux.

Steve Ballmer = Agent Smith?

"[Linux is] a cancer that attaches itself in an intellectual property sense to everything it touches."  --Steve Ballmer

When I read this line by Steve Ballmer, I immediately thought of Agent Smith from the Matrix, and so did my husband, who actually does a pretty funny imitation of Agent Smith/Hugo Weaving.

"Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet. You're a plague and we are the cure." --Agent Smith (sourced from IMDB)

Anyone else have that reaction?  Maybe it's just that I saw the movie recently.  Great movie.  Too bad they didn't make any sequels.

Open Office

Although I had recently heard of Open Office, I had
never used it before this class experience. Previously I had
primarily used Word, Excel, and Outlook, although to be sure I have
never explored all the functions available in any of these programs.

Open Office, Abi Word, MS Word...

This blogging assignment makes me really happy because I often use Open Office to first introduce people to the concept of Open Source. A word processing program is something that the majority of users are familiar with, and because of Microsoft’s monopolization on the industry, it is easily comparable to a familiar product.

Although I am living in Saint Paul, Minnesota, I am a graduate student at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. I am taking this SJSU course through the WISE (web-based Information Science Education) exchange program. This is my second SJSU course as I took Film and Media Collections this summer too.
