Institutional repositories built with open source software can become valuable hubs for storing and accessing the digital output of an institution.  The benefits and conerns regarding the choice of using repository software that is open source are discussed.  Libraries also have an opportunity to become involved in the establishment and management of institutional repositories, and can thus remain at the forefront of their institutions.
